Stop Typing: Talk to Your AI

The microphone button is the most underrated thing in the app. Your best thinking doesn't happen at a keyboard.

You've been typing at AI like it's email. Meanwhile, there's a button in the app that turns it into a phone call, and almost nobody at your level of busy is using it.

ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all have voice. Two flavors: the microphone (you talk, it types your words into the box) and full voice mode (an actual back-and-forth conversation, out loud, like a call). Both matter, for different reasons.

Why talking beats typing for thinking

Typing makes you edit yourself. You write a sentence, delete it, write it again, and the idea dies in the backspace key. Talking is looser, and loose is exactly what brainstorming, planning, and venting need. You already know this: your best ideas show up in the car, on walks, in the shower. Voice mode puts a thinking partner in two of those three places.

The three moves worth stealing

Move 1: The driveway debrief. Just left a client meeting, a networking thing, a hard conversation? Before you pull out of the parking lot, open voice mode and download everything while it's fresh:

Say this
"I just got out of a meeting and I'm going to ramble about it for two minutes. Then summarize what happened, what I committed to, and what I should follow up on."

Move 2: The walking brainstorm. Stuck on anything (an offer, a hard email, what to post this week)? Take it for a walk. Talk through the mess, let it ask you questions, argue back. Twenty minutes later you have a plan and your steps in.

Say this
"I need to think out loud about [the thing]. Ask me one question at a time, push back when I'm being vague, and don't let me off the hook until we have a real answer."

Move 3: The chore-time catch-up. Folding laundry and dishes are now learning time. Ask it to explain something you've been pretending to understand ("explain how Instagram's algorithm actually decides who sees my posts") and interrupt whenever you want. Interrupting is the feature. You can't interrupt a podcast.

The habit that makes rambling useful

Always end a voice session the same way: "okay, turn everything I just said into [a summary / a plan / a draft / a list]." The talking is for thinking. The last sentence is for keeping. Everything you said is saved in the chat as text, so nothing evaporates when you hang up.

Try it today: one voice session, ten minutes, during something you were already doing. If it feels awkward talking to your phone, do it on a walk. Everyone assumes you're on a call, because you basically are.
