The honest answer first: you cannot pick wrong. All three are good. The worst choice is spending another month researching instead of using one.
That said, they do have different personalities, and knowing them helps. Here's the plain-English version, no spec sheets.
ChatGPT: the one everyone knows
Made by OpenAI. It's the most popular, which means the most tutorials, the most screenshots from friends, and the most "how do I do this in ChatGPT" answers when you get stuck. It's a strong all-rounder: writing, brainstorming, planning, images, and a genuinely great voice mode where you just talk to it like a phone call.
Claude: the one that writes like a person
Made by Anthropic. Claude's reputation is thoughtful answers and natural writing. People consistently say it sounds the least like a robot, which matters a lot if you're using AI for emails, captions, or anything with your name on it. It's also excellent at reading long documents and giving careful, nuanced takes.
Gemini: the one built into Google
Made by Google. Its superpower is that it lives where your things already are. If your business runs on Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Calendar, Gemini can work inside those. It's also strong with photos and pulling in current information from search.
Do I need the paid version?
Not to start. Every one of these has a free version that's plenty for learning. The paid plans (about $20 a month) get you the smarter models, more usage, and fewer "come back later" messages. My rule: stay free until the day you hit a limit and feel annoyed. That annoyance means you're using it enough to justify paying. Pay for one, not three.
So... which one?
If you want me to just decide for you: pick one, use it for two weeks, and don't look at the other two. Switching tools every week is how people stay stuck at square one. The skills you build (asking well, giving context, pushing back on drafts) transfer completely. If you learn to get good answers from ChatGPT, you'll get good answers from Claude and Gemini too.
That one message turns the blank box into a conversation, and the conversation into a to-do list. Not sure what to do after that? That's exactly what Your First Week With AI is for.
Skip the blank-box feeling entirely
