You've seen the gallery of what Cowork can do. This is the other half: actually doing one, with your hand held the whole way.
Claude Cowork is the version of Claude that works with the files on your computer. Instead of pasting things into a chat, you point it at a folder and give it a job. Here's your first session, minute by minute.
Minute 0-5: Set the table
Starting with a copy means the worst case of your first session is: nothing happens to anything real. That's how you experiment like a pro, and it's exactly how tech people learn new tools too. They just don't admit it.
Minute 5-15: Give it the job
Type the job like you'd brief a helpful temp:
Then watch. This is the part that rewires your brain a little: it opens things, reads them, makes folders, moves files, and narrates as it goes. It may ask you questions ("these two look like versions of the same contract, which is current?"). Answer like a human. That's the whole skill.
Minute 15-20: Inspect like a boss
When it finishes, read the summary, then open the folder and poke around. Is the structure sensible? Names clear? Anything weird? Tell it: "the subfolder names are too formal, make them plainer" or "you put the tax documents with the receipts, separate those." It fixes, you re-check. That feedback loop is the actual lesson of session one. The organized folder is just a souvenir.
What to do for session two
Now that you've seen it work, pick a job with a real payoff. The gallery is full of them, but the crowd favorites:
And when you're comfortable handing it bigger jobs with rules and judgment, that's called an agent, and I wrote you a guide for hiring your first one.
