Somewhere on your computer is a folder you're a little scared of. You know the one. Every file you've ever half-saved lives there, and finding anything means scrolling and praying.
Here's the good news: digital mess is the single most satisfying job to hand an AI. It never gets bored, it reads every file before deciding where it goes, and it doesn't judge you for "invoice_final_FINAL_v3 (2).pdf". This is a Claude Cowork job (the version of Claude that works with your actual files), and it's honestly the best first impression Cowork makes.
The prep: pick your battlefield (5 minutes)
Don't say "organize my computer." Pick one territory for today:
If this is your very first Cowork session ever, do the practice-folder walkthrough first. Twenty minutes there makes this one feel routine.
The instruction that does the work
Two safety rails are built into that brief, and they matter: propose before moving (you approve the plan, not the aftermath) and nothing gets deleted (candidates go in a folder for YOUR final call). AI sorts, human deletes. That division of labor never changes.
While it works: answer like an owner
It'll hit judgment calls: "Is 'Smith proposal v2' or 'Smith proposal new' the current one?" "Should tax documents live with the client or in their own folder?" These questions are the reason this job needed you plus AI instead of just AI. Sixty seconds of answers from you turns into an organization scheme that actually matches how you think.
The 15-minute review
When it's done: skim the summary, spot-check a few folders, then open "Probably safe to delete" and make the calls. You'll find duplicates you forgot, drafts that died, and at least one file that makes you say "THERE it is." Keep what you keep, delete what you delete, done.
